Dutch Mill Greenhouse – A Blooming Business in Union County
It's officially spring, and like many people, you probably have gardening on your mind. People who live in Union County know that gardening almost always begins with a trip to Dutch Mill Greenhouse. The owners of this Marysville establishment practically wrote the book on this popular pastime.
Dutch Mill Greenhouse is owned and operated by Bob and Mattie Berbee. Along with the rest of the Berbee family, they have deep roots in the industry. The company dates back to 1972 when Henk Berbee (Bob's father) traveled to the United States to open a wholesale distribution center for the parent company in Holland. Today the Leo Berbee Bulb Company sells and ships the finest bulbs and perennials all over the world.
However, it wasn't until Bob Berbee graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in horticulture and greenhouse management that the dream of adding a retail component finally came true. Fifteen years ago, Dutch Mill Greenhouse opened its doors and quickly emerged as Union County's go-to gardening source.
Dutch Mill Greenhouse opens for the season on April 12. Thanks to employees who are experienced in the greenhouse industry and equipped with a passion for horticulture, they are ready to meet all your gardening needs. They're also experts on Union County soil, and they carry a wide selection of Ohio-grown products. "Knowing the soil elements in your area is important to knowing which plants will succeed," said Mattie Berbee. "We pride ourselves on our soil knowledge, and we only select products that work best in this area."
Visitors can tour the warehouse of the Leo Berbee Bulb Company, which supplies millions of flower bulbs each year. The one-hour tour is an opportunity to learn the history of the business, the process behind maintaining quality bulbs, and information about how they pick, pack and ship the finest flower bulbs. "The tour starts with a greeting in Dutch, a brief history of the family business, and then a walk-through of the warehouse and six, temperature-controlled storage coolers," Berbee explained. "People learn some fun facts about flower bulbs and bulb distribution."
Although different tours are available, the complete package, which is priced at $10 per person, includes the warehouse tour, a gardening presentation, a pack of seasonal flower bulbs to take home and a discounted shopping coupon for that day.
