It's Sunday afternoon and several friends are gathered around the table for a weekly pottery class. On this particular day, the group will be rolling, cutting and designing clay pieces that over the course of the next three weeks will be fired, painted and assembled into beautiful wind chimes. At the Marysville Art League, which is located in Marysville's historic Houston House, unique classes like this are a regular occurrence. From pottery and ceramics to paint, yarn, fiber and music, the organization offers a wide range of classes and events for the people of Union County.
Despite the breadth of the current class selection, President Kim Heminger hopes to add even more to the already jam-packed schedule. "We're continually looking to expand our class lineup, hire more instructors and expose our members to new and different art forms," she said.
Fun Events the Whole Family Will Love
In addition to offering creative classes, the Marysville Art League hosts a slew of fun events, such as:
Quarterly Members Mingle – Membership to the Marysville Art League has its perks. For instance, the quarterly Members Mingle is an opportunity for people to make new friends, participate in activities like a photography show or chili cook-off, and enter a drawing to win fantastic prizes.
Cupcakes and Canvas – Admittedly, we’re pretty excited about this particular event. As part of our popular Union County tour packages, we’re thrilled to partner with the Marysville Art League to offer folks the opportunity to visit and tour the historic Houston House, participate in a special canvas class and indulge in some gourmet cupcakes.
Art in Bloom Craft & Vendor Show – Hey, art fans! Don't miss this outstanding show, scheduled to take place on April 1. It will feature work from a number of local artisans, displaying a wide variety of unique gifts and handmade goods. Best of all, 100 percent of the proceeds from this event will be donated to ongoing restoration efforts at the historic Houston House.
A Mix of Art and History
The Marysville Art League has a proud history that spans nearly four decades. In 1979, a group of Union County artists, bound together by a shared vision and some lofty goals, set out to design a space where community members could encounter, create and appreciate art. After meeting for several years in temporary locations, the group purchased a two-story brick home that was built in 1872.
While the house boasted some good bones, it was in desperate need of tender loving care. Armed with an ambitious spirit and a very small pocketbook, the group worked tirelessly to update and restore the house to what it is today. Throughout the years, the historic Houston House has remained an iconic fixture in Marysville. When it’s not being used for classes and events, it’s available for rent and is the perfect backdrop for a wedding, shower, birthday party or celebration.
The Marysville Art League has come a long way over the years, and there's plenty more on the horizon. “We're excited for what the future holds," Heminger said. "We're a welcoming, family-friendly organization, and we're proud of what we offer this community."
